ABSTRACT
Javan Deer (Cervus timorensis russa) is the endemic species in Indonesia which has potential to fulfilled life necessaries. Captive breeding still has obstacles because of lack information about reproduction biology of deer. Conventional hormone measurement can induce stress and death of deer. The aim of this research was to understand non-invasive method application for measurement of testosterone and cortisol concentration of doe in Bunder captive breeding area.
This research was done using fecal samples from two doe. Sample was collected every morning during September 2010. Fecal collection was processed by liofilisation, pulverisation and extraction. Fecal extraction was analyzed using ELISA. Then, the results were analyzed using T-test and Pearson correlation test.
The results showed that non-invasive method was applicable for testosterone and cortisol measurement of doe. Testosterone and cortisol concentration were not significantly different and counted as normal concentration. Fluctuation of testosterone and cortisol concentration indicated that the testis has normal activity. According to the testosterone concentration in September 2010, both of doe were shown active reproduction.
